After an impressive 25-year career, veteran journalist Holly Morris said goodbye to FOX 5 DC in 2024, marking the end of an era in Washington, D.C. broadcasting. Known for her energetic and hands-on approach to reporting, Morris became a trusted figure in the city. But her career was full of both successes and challenges, as well as a few unexpected moments that left a lasting impact on her legacy.

From Cincinnati to D.C.: The Early Years

Holly Morris’s journey into journalism wasn’t typical. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, she first studied civil engineering at Duke University, graduating in 1993. Few could have guessed that her technical background would lead her to television news. But in 1998, Morris joined WTTG, FOX’s Washington, D.C. affiliate, and quickly became a familiar face on the morning newscasts and Good Day DC.

In her early days at FOX 5, Morris was known for diving straight into the stories she covered. She wasn’t content to simply report from the sidelines—she actively participated in the events, giving her coverage a personal touch. This hands-on style made her stand out and earned her a loyal following of viewers.

Building a Reputation

Over the years, Holly Morris gained significant recognition for her live reporting. She won four regional Emmy Awards for “Best Live Reporting” and a prestigious regional Edward R. Murrow Award. These honors highlighted her skill as a journalist and her ability to deliver news with authenticity and clarity.

Morris’s unique style helped shape FOX 5 into the trusted news station it is today. Whether covering major political events or local stories, she brought a personal connection to every report, making her a beloved figure in the D.C. area.

Personal Struggles Behind the Scenes

While her professional achievements are widely known, Holly Morris has also faced personal challenges. In 2016, after years of speculation, she opened up about her 2005 divorce from former FOX 5 weatherman Tom Sater. The breakup, which followed Sater’s affair with a co-worker, caused tension at the station, especially since Morris had once worked alongside the woman involved.

Morris shared her emotional journey on FOX 5’s podcast, describing how she learned about the affair and how many of her colleagues had known about it before she did. Things got even more complicated when Sater’s new partner, former FOX 5 anchor Gurvir Dhindsa, eventually became a colleague. Morris shared her disbelief, even joking about Dhindsa mimicking her style.

Despite the challenges, Morris found happiness when she reconnected with her college crush, lawyer Thomas Espy. They married in 2007 and settled in Rockville, Maryland, where they raised their son, Hayden. Morris later described her divorce as a painful but necessary turning point that led her to personal fulfillment.

On-Air Controversies and Mistakes

No career in live TV is without its share of controversies, and Holly Morris had her own memorable moments. One of the most talked-about incidents occurred in 2013 during the coverage of President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. In a live broadcast, Morris accidentally said a word that sounded offensive instead of the intended term “inaugural.”

The mistake quickly went viral, with some viewers accusing her of using the slur on purpose, while others argued it was just an innocent slip of the tongue. Morris never publicly addressed the incident, but it highlighted the challenges of live television, where mistakes can’t be edited out.

As she wrapped up her career, Holly Morris left behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and resilience. Her commitment to bringing important stories to her viewers, combined with her personal touch, made her a cherished figure in Washington, D.C., and her impact on the station and community will be remembered for years to come.
