The music world is mourning the loss of a foundational figure in one of the most iconic bands of all time. Colin “Smiley” Petersen, the original drummer for the Bee Gees, has passed away at the age of 78.

His death was confirmed in a statement shared on November 18 by his current band, Best Of The Bee Gees, via Facebook.

“It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our dear friend Colin ‘Smiley’ Petersen,” the group wrote.
“He enriched our lives and bound our group with love, care and respect. Not sure how we can go on without his glowing smile and deep friendship.”

Petersen was more than just the man behind the drums—he helped shape the early sound of the Bee Gees during their rise to international stardom. His rhythmic backbone and musical intuition brought depth to their harmonies and energy to their performances.

Affectionately nicknamed “Smiley,” Petersen was beloved not just for his musical talent, but for his warmth and spirit. His easygoing nature and contagious grin made him a cherished member of every band he played in, and a friend to fans and fellow musicians alike.

While the Bee Gees went on to become a global phenomenon, Petersen’s role in their foundation cannot be overstated. His beats were part of the magic that turned three brothers into legends.

As tributes pour in from around the world, one sentiment rings true: Colin Petersen brought joy, rhythm, and soul into every room he entered.

He may have taken his final bow, but the beat he set lives on in every song, every memory, and every heart he touched.

Rest in peace, Smiley.
