Deli Owner’s “White Heritage” Sign Sparks Backlash and Business Closure

Jim Boggess, a deli owner in the small town of Flemington, New Jersey, says he simply wanted to celebrate his heritage. But when he taped a handwritten sign in his shop window that read:
“CELEBRATE YOUR WHITE HERITAGE IN MARCH — WHITE HISTORY MONTH,”
he never expected the firestorm that would follow.

A Message That Didn’t Land

Boggess believed he was making a personal cultural statement. But to many, the message came across differently. One customer, Bhakti Curtis, who is of mixed-race background, felt deeply disturbed by the sign. He believed it was disrespectful toward Black History Month and even likened the design of the sign’s lettering—specifically the “T” in “WHITE”—to a symbol associated with hate groups like the KKK.

Curtis went to the local police station to file a complaint. However, officers determined that the sign did not break any laws and was not legally considered hate speech.

A Community Reacts

Although the sign wasn’t deemed illegal, the damage to Boggess’s reputation was swift and severe. For nearly four days, he was questioned by community members and media alike. Eventually, he took the sign down. But by then, the controversy had taken its toll.

Customers stopped coming. Business slowed to a trickle. And just one month after the sign first went up, Boggess was forced to shut down his deli for good.

An Attempt at Reconciliation

In an unexpected turn, Boggess and Curtis later sat down together and reconciled. The two men even posed for a photo, shaking hands—hoping to show that dialogue was still possible, even amid disagreement.

A Deeper Debate

The incident sparked a wider conversation about heritage, freedom of expression, and racial sensitivity in a diverse community. While some defended Boggess’s right to express his pride in his heritage, others felt the sign was poorly timed and tone-deaf—especially given the country’s ongoing struggles with racial inequality.

In the end, this small-town controversy became a national headline—highlighting just how delicate and complex conversations about race and identity remain in America today.
