Bret Baier’s Son Paul, 16, Thrives After Life-Saving Open-Heart Surgery: “I’m So Grateful to Have My Life”

What started as a common cold turned into a terrifying ordeal for 16-year-old Paul Baier, son of Fox News anchor Bret Baier. The varsity tennis and golf player underwent emergency open-heart surgery last year to remove a dangerous, golf ball-sized aneurysm near his heart—his fifth heart surgery since childhood.

In an emotional interview with People, the Baier family opened up about the whirlwind series of events that likely saved Paul’s life.

It all began with what seemed like a typical cold. But Paul’s mom, Amy, trusted her instincts. Even though doctors thought it was just a rhinovirus, she insisted on more testing because of Paul’s history with congenital heart issues. A chest X-ray revealed something unusual near the lungs, and out of caution, they shared it with Paul’s cardiologist.

That extra step made all the difference.

While back in Washington, D.C., for what was supposed to be a routine follow-up, an MRI confirmed the shocking truth: Paul had a large aneurysm dangerously close to rupturing. Within 24 hours, he was rushed into a complex 10-hour surgery.

“I’m so grateful to have my life,” Paul said, reflecting on how quickly everything changed.

Thanks to quick decisions, expert care, and a mother’s intuition, Paul is now recovering and back to enjoying life. His story is a powerful reminder of how listening to your gut—and pushing for answers—can truly save lives.
