In a notable move, the Senate confirmed Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence on Thursday with a 52–46 vote. While nearly all Republican senators backed the confirmation, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was the lone Republican to vote against her.
All 47 Democrats opposed the nomination, but Gabbard’s confirmation still passed with support from every other Republican senator.

“While I continue to have concerns about certain positions she has previously taken, I appreciate her commitment to rein in the outsized scope of the agency,” Murkowski wrote on X.
Senator Cassidy added that he would support the president’s pick, noting, “I will trust President Trump on this decision.”
Gabbard served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2021. After leaving the Democratic Party in 2022, she endorsed Trump’s 2024 campaign and formally joined the Republican Party the following year.
McConnell’s “No” Vote Stands Out
McConnell’s vote marked a quiet but symbolic departure from the party line, though he has not issued a formal statement explaining his decision. His opposition drew attention, especially as Gabbard’s nomination had become a centerpiece of the administration’s national security plans.
What’s Next in the Confirmation Lineup
Gabbard’s confirmation is just one of several pending votes on President Trump’s Cabinet picks. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has put forward five more nominees for review.
Among them is Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominated to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services. On Wednesday, the Senate voted 52–47 to advance Kennedy’s nomination. A final confirmation vote is expected Thursday or Friday.
Senator Cassidy, initially uncertain, confirmed he would support Kennedy following conversations with Vice President J.D. Vance.
“I want to thank VP JD specifically for his honest counsel,” Cassidy posted. “With the serious commitments I’ve received from the administration… I will vote yes.”
Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID), who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, expressed strong support for Kennedy, citing his record on health care reform and transparency.
