In a thrilling conclusion to American Idol’s 23rd season, Jamal Roberts was named the winner during Sunday night’s live finale. The victory came after more than 26 million votes were cast by fans across the country, who chose between the final three contestants: John Foster, Breanna Nix, and Roberts himself.

Producers had hinted it would be a close finish, and according to Idol showrunner Megan Michaels Wolflick, the uncertainty only added to the excitement.

“I love when a finale keeps everyone guessing,” she told TVLine. “There was no clear frontrunner this year—it truly could’ve gone to any of them.”

Judges Weigh In on Final Performances

Judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood each had their favorites going into the final round.

Bryan acknowledged Roberts had been consistent all season but also praised Nix and Foster for building momentum at the right time.

“Jamal has led much of the season,” he told People. “But John and Breanna both had big moments. Anything could’ve changed with one performance.”

Richie emphasized that American Idol is not just about vocal ability.

“It’s about connection,” he said. “Fans vote for the artist they feel a bond with. Singing is just one part of the equation.”

Underwood had been an early champion of Foster, even advocating for him during auditions.

“You’re standing here now proving me right,” she told Foster after a recent performance. “If you’re not careful, you might just win this whole thing.”

A Night of Standout Performances

Each finalist took the stage for two solo numbers. Foster performed country hits from Toby Keith and John Denver, Nix delivered emotional covers of songs by Katy Nichole and Miley Cyrus, and Roberts brought his signature soul to tracks by TEEKS and The Temptations.

The trio also joined forces for a powerful rendition of Queen’s “We Are the Champions.”

In addition, each contestant performed a duet with a celebrity guest. Highlights included:

• Nix teaming up with Brandon Lake for “Daddy’s DNA”,

• And Roberts performing “Unpretty” and “Liar” with Jelly Roll.

Midway through the broadcast, Breanna Nix was eliminated, leaving Roberts and Foster as the final two.

Each performed their debut singles: Foster debuted “Tell That Angel I Love Her”, while Roberts performed “Heal”, an emotional ballad that resonated deeply with viewers.

In the end, it was Jamal Roberts who earned the most votes, winning the title of American Idol 2025.
