FBI Investigates Former Director Comey’s Controversial Social Media Post

The FBI has confirmed it is reviewing a recent social media post by former Director James Comey that raised concerns due to its perceived message and timing. The post, which featured seashells spelling out “86 47,” was interpreted by some as a coded phrase, prompting public concern and official follow-up.

Comey deleted the image shortly after posting it and later issued a clarification, stating that he “didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence” and that it “never occurred to me.” Despite this explanation, the post has drawn criticism from several former and current federal officials.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino issued a statement on social media addressing the situation. “The Director and I spend considerable time ensuring our agency remains focused on professionalism and public trust,” he said. “Any incident that raises questions about our integrity must be taken seriously.”

Bongino added that the FBI is committed to supporting federal partners in the investigation of potential threats involving public officials and confirmed that the agency is cooperating with the U.S. Secret Service, which has already interviewed Comey about the post.

“As Deputy Director of the FBI, I take seriously the responsibility to maintain transparency and accountability within the agency, including addressing concerns tied to former officials,” Bongino stated.

FBI Director Kash Patel released a separate message, confirming that the agency is coordinating with other agencies and reviewing internal processes to ensure that public confidence remains strong.

Both Bongino and Patel emphasized that efforts to improve internal protocols are ongoing and not tied to any single incident. “We are constantly reviewing past decisions and striving to ensure they are not repeated,” Bongino noted.

An interview featuring Bongino and Director Patel was aired on FOX Business, during which they discussed broader efforts to reform and strengthen the agency’s culture and public accountability.

The FBI has not announced any formal conclusions regarding the investigation into the post, and further updates are expected as reviews continue.
