Teen Vaping Crisis: Doctors Warn of “Popcorn Lung” Sending Kids to the ER

Doctors across the country are sounding the alarm as more teens are landing in emergency rooms with a serious and often permanent lung condition known as “popcorn lung.”

What Is Popcorn Lung?
Popcorn lung, or bronchiolitis obliterans, is a rare disease that damages the smallest airways in the lungs. It causes inflammation and scarring, making it hard to breathe. There’s no cure — only treatments to manage symptoms and slow the damage.

The disease got its name years ago after being discovered in workers at a microwave popcorn factory. They had been exposed to diacetyl, a buttery flavoring chemical that turned toxic when inhaled. Sadly, diacetyl is still found in some flavored vape liquids, particularly in the U.S.

Why Vaping Is So Dangerous

Vaping doesn’t just involve nicotine. Vape liquids often contain a cocktail of chemicals — including acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and over 180 different flavorings — many of which have never been tested for safety when heated and inhaled. Once inhaled, these chemicals bypass the body’s filters and go straight into the lungs and bloodstream.

This creates a perfect storm for lung damage, especially among teens and young adults whose bodies are still developing.

The Symptoms Aren’t Always Immediate

Popcorn lung symptoms can take time to show up, but when they do, they can be life-changing:

  • Persistent coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Extreme fatigue

Because the damage is permanent, catching it early and stopping further exposure is critical. Treatments can include inhalers, steroids, and even oxygen therapy — and in severe cases, lung transplants.

Why Teens Are Most at Risk

The bright packaging, candy-like flavors (like mango, cotton candy, and bubblegum), and easy access make vaping appealing to teens — but the risks are real and growing. Many don’t realize that the flavors they love may be filled with dangerous chemicals like diacetyl.

And because these substances are inhaled directly into the lungs, the impact is fast and intense — far different from smoking or eating something with the same ingredients.

What Can Be Done?

The best protection is prevention. That means not vaping and encouraging young people to steer clear of e-cigarettes entirely.

If you or someone you know has been vaping and is showing symptoms like a chronic cough or trouble breathing, don’t wait — talk to a doctor right away. Early action can help slow the disease and avoid more serious complications.

Support groups and medical teams are also available to help families deal with the emotional and physical toll of living with popcorn lung.
