Freshman Republican Rep. Brandon Gill from Texas is facing heavy criticism after publicly calling for the deportation of Rep. Ilhan Omar—a naturalized U.S. citizen and sitting Congresswoman from Minnesota.

“America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia,” Gill posted on social platform X.

His post accompanied a video showing Omar advising Somali immigrants—some of whom may be undocumented—on their legal rights during encounters with immigration officials. The video was originally shared by conservative commentator Greg Price, who accused Omar of helping undocumented immigrants avoid deportation.

Online Backlash and Support

Gill’s remarks lit up social media. Supporters called Omar “anti-American” and demanded legal action. One user wrote, “She’s a fraud, a liar, and a traitor!” Another claimed she was “committing federal crimes” by providing legal guidance to undocumented people.

Gill stood by his comments, later adding, “We should have never let Ilhan Omar into our country.”

A spokesperson for Gill told The Hill that Omar’s actions “raise serious concerns about her loyalties,” accusing her of helping undocumented immigrants evade U.S. law.

What Omar Actually Said in the Video

In the clip, Omar calmly tells Somali community members:

“You are not obligated to answer [ICE] questions. Say you’ve been advised by a lawyer not to respond. You don’t have to give your name, status, or explain how you came here. Know your rights and don’t share more than you need to.”

Supporters argue Omar was simply educating people on their legal rights, not encouraging illegal activity.

Omar Responds: “These People Are Ridiculous”

In an interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan, Omar dismissed Gill’s comments.

“These people are just ridiculous,” she said.

Pressed further, she added:

“It’s hard to have an intellectual discussion with them. The level of ignorance is embarrassing—not just for Congress, but for the country.”

She also suggested that the outrage is part of a larger political decline, where logic and critical thinking are being replaced by performative outrage.
