“We Just Want to Feel Safe”: Queens and Bronx Residents Voice Concerns Over Crime

In parts of Queens and the Bronx, many residents say they’re feeling increasingly uneasy as crime in their neighborhoods continues to rise.

Recent public safety reports show that major crimes—including burglaries, robberies, and auto thefts—have gone up significantly in some areas. For instance:

  • In the 110th Precinct in Queens, reports of major crimes are up over 100%
  • The 115th Precinct has seen an 85% increase

These numbers have left many locals worried about their families, their homes, and their communities.

“People Are Afraid to Go Outside”

For longtime residents like Guadalupe Alvarez of Elmhurst, the change in her neighborhood is hard to ignore.

“It’s not the same as it used to be. I’m afraid to walk home at night,” she said. “I love my community, but I’m starting to wonder if I can stay.”

Others have echoed similar fears, saying they’ve seen a rise in break-ins, vandalism, and other incidents that leave them feeling unsafe.

Locals Ask for Support and Solutions

Community voices, including local advocates and city council candidates, are urging more attention to the day-to-day needs of neighborhoods. They say the focus needs to be on safety, cleanliness, and access to public services.

“People are suffering. They want to feel safe where they live,” said Ramses Frias, a local community leader. “We need real solutions, not just words.”

Experts point to several contributing factors, including fewer police recruits and strained local resources, which can delay emergency response and make it harder to maintain public safety.

“Nobody wants to be a police officer right now,” said Hannah Meyers, a public safety researcher. “That’s part of why communities feel like they’re on their own.”

Looking Ahead: Rebuilding Trust and Safety

Community members say that while big issues matter, the everyday experience of feeling safe in your own neighborhood should come first.

“Safety is the foundation for everything,” said Betsy Brantner Smith, a public safety advocate. “If people don’t feel secure, it affects every part of their lives—from going to work to letting their kids play outside.”

For now, residents say they just want their voices heard—and their concerns taken seriously.
