A new congressional committee will be formed in the upcoming session of Congress to continue the investigation into the events of January 6, 2021. Representative Barry Loudermilk of Georgia confirmed the formation after meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson, with whom he posed for a photo to mark the committee’s beginning.

The new committee is part of a broader legislative effort to revisit and expand on past inquiries. While specific details are still being finalized, Loudermilk indicated that the structure may give Speaker Johnson more direct involvement in appointing members and shaping the panel’s focus.

The initiative follows up on Loudermilk’s earlier work, which included reports on the security response and communication breakdowns leading up to and during the January 6 incident. He has stated that the previous select committee was too narrowly focused and emphasized the need to look at a wider range of security issues.

There are discussions about whether the committee’s title should reference January 6 directly, as the phrase could be viewed as limiting or emotionally charged. Loudermilk noted that the scope may include broader security concerns beyond that day alone.

Speaker Johnson has affirmed that the new investigation will receive full funding.

In addition to this committee, other ongoing inquiries are being revived. Subpoenas have been reissued regarding Justice Department investigators and matters involving the handling of classified materials and previous tax investigations. These actions continue efforts from the prior session of Congress and are still under legal review.

Some of the subpoenas relate to audio recordings and other materials currently being reviewed in court. Hearings and depositions connected to these matters are pending judicial decisions.

As the new Congress takes shape, additional oversight efforts and reviews of past and current investigations are expected to continue in various areas.
