Federal authorities have announced a significant arrest following several days of unrest tied to anti-ICE demonstrations in Los Angeles.
Video footage aired by FOX LA on Monday showed a truck unloading and distributing what appeared to be large quantities of professional-grade protective gear, including high-tech face shields. These shields—identified as Uvex Bionic Face Shields, commonly used in industrial environments—were reportedly used by some demonstrators to shield against crowd control measures.
According to officials, the protective gear made it more challenging for law enforcement to manage the situation and disperse crowds.
Federal investigators have since arrested Alejandro Theodoro Orellana, who is accused of conspiring to incite civil disorder. The charges stem from his alleged role in coordinating the delivery of riot gear to individuals participating in the protests.
Orellana has also been identified by authorities as a member of a group believed to be involved in organizing and supporting protest actions across multiple cities.
In addition, federal sources indicated that a website had been used to raise funds for the procurement and distribution of protective equipment used during demonstrations.
The arrest was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, in coordination with the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. Orellana faces charges under 18 U.S.C. § 371, Conspiracy to Commit Civil Disorder.
A separate legal development also unfolded this week regarding the role of the National Guard in Los Angeles. A federal appeals court granted a motion to continue the Guard’s involvement in helping protect critical infrastructure and public safety during the ongoing unrest.
The decision temporarily overruled an earlier ruling that had questioned the scope of federal authority in directing National Guard resources within state borders.
Legal experts continue to assess the implications of the case, which highlights the complex balance between state and federal responsibilities in emergency responses.
