Incredible new footage shows moment sole survivor of Air India plane crash escapes wreckage

In one of the most tragic aviation disasters in recent memory, a British man has emerged as the sole survivor of a devastating Air India plane crash that claimed the lives of 270 people, including all other passengers, crew, and individuals on the ground.

The flight, a Boeing 787-8 designated AI171, was en route to London from Ahmedabad, India, when it crashed just moments after takeoff on June 12. The aircraft slammed into a building used as accommodation for medical college staff, erupting into flames and leaving a scene of horror in its wake.

A Miraculous Escape

Miraculously, 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh from Leicester survived the crash. New footage captured the incredible moment he emerged from the burning wreckage, dazed and limping, with flames and thick smoke raging behind him.

Ramesh, who had been sitting in seat 11A, managed to unbuckle his seatbelt and crawl through a gap in the wreckage to safety. “When I got up, there were bodies all around me,” he told reporters from his hospital bed. “I was scared. I stood up and ran.”

Stumbling through the nearby streets, bleeding and disoriented, Ramesh was spotted by locals who quickly guided him toward emergency responders. Despite the catastrophic scene, doctors confirmed that he had only minor injuries, including abrasions to his arm and swelling near his eyes. He remains in stable condition.

Personal Tragedy

Ramesh had been traveling with his brother, Ajay, who was seated on the same row. Tragically, Ajay did not survive the crash. Speaking to Indian state media, Ramesh revealed that his part of the aircraft had not struck the building directly, which may have spared his life. He recalled hearing a loud bang and noticing flickering lights moments after takeoff—an early sign that something had gone terribly wrong.

He described the moment the jet went down as “like being in a nightmare,” saying: “I saw people dying in front of me. For a moment, I felt like I was going to die too. But then I opened my eyes, and I was alive.”

Investigation Underway

Authorities have since recovered the plane’s black box from the rooftop of a nearby building. The flight data recorder is expected to provide critical information, including cockpit conversations, warning signals, and possible malfunctions that may have led to the crash.

While investigations continue, no official explanation has been given for the sudden failure. Aviation experts are analyzing all available data, and safety teams are combing through the wreckage for clues.

Support for Victims’ Families

Air India’s CEO Campbell Wilson has announced that each family of the victims will receive an interim payment of 2.5 million rupees (approx. £21,000 / $28,000). In addition, Tata Sons, the parent company of Air India, has pledged a further 10 million rupees (approx. £85,000 / $115,000) to assist grieving families.
