The last time I saw my sixteen-year-old son Ethan, he was standing in the hallway tying his sneakers.
“Did you finish your history assignment?” I asked from the kitchen.
“Yeah, Mom.”
He grabbed his jacket, slung his backpack over one shoulder, and kissed my cheek on the way out the door.
“See you tonight.”
I watched him walk down the street like I always did.
I had no idea that would become the last normal moment of my life.
Because Ethan never came home that night.
At first, I told myself not to panic.
Teenagers stay late after school sometimes.
Maybe he was practicing guitar with friends.
Maybe his phone battery died.
I repeated those excuses while I cooked dinner.
While I ate alone.
While his plate sat untouched in the oven, still warm.
But by the time midnight came and his room was still empty, a cold fear had settled in my chest.
I called his phone.
Straight to voicemail.
By 1 a.m., I was driving through every street in our neighborhood calling his name.
By 3 a.m., I was sitting inside a police station reporting my son missing.
The officer behind the desk listened patiently while writing notes.
“Sometimes teenagers leave for a few days,” he said. “Arguments with parents. Wanting space.”
“He didn’t run away,” I said firmly.
The officer looked up.
“How do you know?”
“Because Ethan is the kind of kid who apologizes when someone bumps into him in the hallway.”
The officer gave a polite smile.
But I could see the doubt in his eyes.
And I hated that feeling.
Because deep down, I knew something terrible had happened.
The Video That Changed Everything
The next morning I went straight to Ethan’s school.
The principal allowed me to watch the security footage from the front gate.
Students poured out of the building in noisy groups.
Then I saw him.
Ethan.
Walking beside a girl.
When she turned her head toward the camera, my stomach dropped.
“Lily,” I whispered.
Lily had been to our house a few times. Quiet. Polite. Always nervous.
In the video, Ethan and Lily walked together toward the bus stop.
A city bus arrived.
They stepped on.
And vanished from the screen.
That was the last time anyone officially saw my son.
