For most married couples, the question of when they will have children is a common one. But for Charli Worgan and her husband, Cullen, the question was often framed differently—not “when” but “why.”
Both Charli and Cullen, who live in Sydney, have different forms of dwarfism and have frequently found themselves the subject of public scrutiny. This intensified when Charli became pregnant with their first child, as outsiders questioned their decision to start a family.
Yet, against all odds, Charli and Cullen have built a beautiful life with their children.
Sharing Their Journey
After the birth of their first daughter, Charli felt compelled to create a social media account to share her experiences and educate others about their family life. What she didn’t anticipate was how widely her story would resonate. Today, her Instagram account has attracted over 300,000 followers, offering a candid and heartfelt look into the joys and challenges of parenting.
Now parents to two daughters, Charli and Cullen recently shared news that they were expecting their third child. However, the announcement was bittersweet.
Navigating a Complex Pregnancy
Due to their genetic conditions, each of Charli’s pregnancies comes with difficult medical realities. Their children can inherit one of two types of dwarfism—either Charli’s or Cullen’s—or they could be of average height. However, there is also a fourth possibility: if the baby inherits both genetic variations, it results in what is known as “double dominant dwarfism,” which doctors say is fatal at birth.
This means that every pregnancy requires extensive genetic testing, something Charli has had to endure multiple times. While many expectant mothers celebrate reaching the 12-week mark, Charli faced a far more emotional reality.
“While most at 12 weeks are celebrating the joy of being able to announce pregnancy, I was lining up for Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)—a procedure similar to an amniocentesis,” she shared. “That’s a massive needle through my abdomen to take a sample of placenta, carrying a 2% miscarriage risk, in order to test the genetic makeup of my baby.”
Charli explained the four possible outcomes for their third child:
1. The baby could be of average height.
2. The baby could have Achondroplasia, the same form of dwarfism as Charli.
3. The baby could have Geleophysic Dysplasia, the same form of dwarfism as Cullen.
4. The baby could inherit both genetic variations, a condition considered fatal. In this case, Charli would have had the heartbreaking decision of whether to continue or terminate the pregnancy.
“The reality was that I was waiting to find out if I could bring this little one into the world come March 2021, or if his or her journey would end here,” she wrote.
Facing Criticism and Finding Strength
By choosing to be so open about her experiences, Charli has received both support and criticism. Some people question their decision to have children given the genetic risks, something she has addressed head-on.
“I’ve copped criticism for choosing to have babies with these odds, and that’s a whole conversation in itself,” she wrote. “But by sharing this tiny piece of the puzzle, those who doubt can see that bringing a child into this world with my odds is no simple decision—it’s all about being kind.”
Despite the challenges, Charli and Cullen’s story is one of resilience, love, and unwavering commitment to their family.
Welcoming Baby Rip
In late February, Charli gave birth to their third child, a baby boy named Rip. She marked the occasion with a heartfelt post, sharing a photo of herself with her newborn and reflecting on the journey of motherhood.
“I’m tired, but I’m feeling ever so grateful and lucky,” she wrote. “There’s no ‘correct’ way to do motherhood, but I’m sure as anything there’s no ‘wrong’ way either.”
At its core, Charli’s story is a testament to the universal experience of parenting—the struggles, the triumphs, and the deep love that transcends all obstacles. Her journey may be unique, but the emotions she shares are ones that parents everywhere can relate to. Through honesty and vulnerability, she continues to show the world that family is built on love, not limitations.
