Disturbing Conspiracy Theories Swirl Around Texas Football Star’s Death — Police and FBI Respond

The tragic death of Austin Metcalf, a beloved high school football star from Frisco, Texas, has rocked the community and sparked national outrage. But alongside the grief, a wave of misinformation and cruel conspiracy theories has flooded social media, forcing both local law enforcement and the FBI to step in.

A Life Cut Short

Seventeen-year-old Austin Metcalf, a promising athlete and honor student, was fatally stabbed on April 2 at Kuykendall Stadium. Police say the stabbing occurred after a sudden confrontation with another 17-year-old, Karmelo Anthony — a teen Metcalf’s family says he had never met before. What began as a verbal dispute quickly escalated, ending with Anthony allegedly pulling a knife and stabbing Metcalf in the chest.

Social Media Misinformation Frenzy

In the wake of Austin’s death, fake social media accounts posing as police and officials began spreading disturbing and entirely false narratives about what happened.

One post falsely claimed that Metcalf had actually died from a drug overdose — not the stab wound. Another viral image, doctored to appear as a report from the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office, claimed the cause of death was “MDMA toxicity,” relegating the stab wound to a “secondary” injury. Police have now confirmed that this report is completely fabricated.

“The Frisco Police Department is aware of an image circulating on social media purporting to be a report from the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office,” authorities stated in a Facebook post.
“At this time, the report has NOT been released. Therefore, any information currently found online is FALSE.”

Impersonating the Police Chief

Even more troubling, a fake account impersonating Frisco Police Chief David Shilson shared a false narrative that Metcalf had started the altercation by “sucker punching” Anthony and smashing his phone on the bleachers. This account has since triggered a criminal investigation by the FBI and local police.

Chief Shilson issued a warning directly to the public:

“Beware of those taking to social media to deliberately spread misinformation, hate, fear, and division… I urge everyone to only trust information from official releases and verified sources.”

Families Caught in the Crossfire

Both families have found themselves overwhelmed by grief, public attention — and deception. A fraudulent GoFundMe campaign pretending to raise money for legal expenses has been condemned by the Anthony family as a scam.

In contrast, a verified campaign hosted on GiveSendGo has raised nearly $200,000 to support Anthony’s legal defense. In their statement, his family said:

“The narrative being spread is false, unjust, and harmful… We are a family of faith and deeply grateful for your prayers and support during this trying time.”

High-Profile Defense

With the funds raised, Anthony’s family has secured two well-known Texas attorneys with experience in racially charged cases. The legal team includes lawyers who helped secure justice in the high-profile 2015 McKinney pool party case, which gained national attention after a video showed a police officer violently detaining a teenage Black girl.

“Karmelo, like all citizens of the United States, is entitled to a fair and impartial legal process,” said the attorneys, Clark and Cole.
“We are committed to ensuring that Karmelo’s rights are protected every step of the way.”

Anthony is currently being held at Collin County Jail on a first-degree murder charge, with bond set at $1 million.

Community Reacts

Despite the chaos online, community leaders urge the public to remain focused on compassion and justice.

“This is a much bigger deal on social media than it is in Frisco,” said City Councilman Brian Livingston.
“I don’t think social media represents who we are. Our city is grieving, but we are united. People here are focused on helping these two families heal.”
