102-Year-Old Nutritionist Shares 7 Simple Rules for a Long, Healthy Life — “It’s Not Just Genetics

Meet Dr. John Scharffenberg — a 102-year-old nutritionist who’s not just surviving, but thriving. Despite losing close family members at a young age, he’s stayed mentally sharp, physically active, and fully independent. His secret? It’s not luck or good genes — it’s the way he lives.

As a longtime professor at Loma Linda University, Dr. Scharffenberg swears by seven simple habits that he says can help anyone live longer and healthier, especially by preventing diseases like heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes.

🥗 Dr. Scharffenberg’s 7 Rules for a Long, Healthy Life:

1. Never smoke
He’s avoided tobacco his entire life, calling it one of the top killers — and totally preventable.

2. Don’t drink alcohol
Even small amounts raise your risk of cancer, he says. The safest amount? Zero.

3. Stay active — especially after 40
Exercise is more important than even nutrition, in his view. He recommends brisk walking and staying busy with things like gardening.

4. Eat at set times (no snacking!)
He eats his last meal in the early afternoon and doesn’t snack — a form of intermittent fasting that helps the body rest and reset.

5. Choose a plant-based diet
A vegetarian for life, he fills his plate with fruits, nuts, seeds, and wholesome foods, avoiding meat altogether.

6. Cut the saturated fat
Skipping fatty animal products keeps cholesterol and blood pressure in check.

7. Skip the sugar
He’s careful with sugar, opting for fruit or natural alternatives like cashew cream when cooking.

💡 “These aren’t secrets,” he says. “They’re choices anyone can make.”
