Barack Obama is setting the record straight—and getting real—about his marriage to Michelle Obama, following years of speculation and divorce rumors.
During a recent appearance at Hamilton College in New York, the former president surprised the crowd with a rare and heartfelt admission about life at home:
“I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” he said, half-joking. “So I’ve been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.”
The audience laughed, but the comment struck a chord. After more than 30 years of marriage—and eight of those years spent under the intense spotlight of the White House—the Obamas have always been open about the ups and downs of their relationship.
A Presidential Marriage, Under Pressure
Rumors about tension or even a split have circled the couple for years, though neither Barack nor Michelle has ever confirmed any serious marital issues.
Still, both have shared honest reflections about the strain politics placed on their family.
On her podcast, Michelle once poked fun at one of Barack’s quirks that drove her nuts: his laid-back approach to time.
“Barack… had to adjust to what on time meant for me,” she joked, blaming it on his Hawaiian roots. “Because he was on that island time!”
She recalled moments when Barack would start getting ready right when they were supposed to be leaving—prompting a familiar, eye-rolling “Dude…” from her.
Despite the bumps, Michelle admits he’s improved—and their daughters, Malia and Sasha, have clearly inherited her knack for punctuality. “They know to arrive early whenever they’re meeting up with me,” she said with a laugh.
Still Working on It
Obama’s remarks come as he works on the second volume of his presidential memoirs. But at home, he’s clearly focused on a different kind of legacy: being the best husband he can be.
“Digging out of the deficit” may sound like political talk, but it’s really just a loving husband trying to stay in his wife’s good graces.
