Recent news of former President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis has sparked widespread concern and questions among medical professionals about how the disease progressed so far before being detected.
According to a statement from Biden’s personal office, he has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has already spread to his bones. The cancer was discovered following an increase in urinary symptoms, which prompted further evaluation. The diagnosis was confirmed through a biopsy, revealing a high Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) and evidence of metastasis.
Although the cancer is advanced, the statement noted that it appears to be hormone-sensitive, which may allow for effective treatment. Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team.
Following the announcement, several top medical professionals expressed surprise that such a serious case of prostate cancer had not been diagnosed earlier. Prostate cancer is typically detected through routine screenings, including blood tests measuring prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, which are recommended for men over the age of 50.
Dr. Howie Forman, a professor at Yale University, commented that such an aggressive cancer would likely have shown elevated PSA levels well before the appearance of symptoms, raising questions about whether screenings had been regularly performed.
Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, echoed this concern, stating that most cases are identified through PSA tests and follow-up imaging, such as MRIs. He noted that when symptoms like urinary issues appear, the cancer may have already spread beyond the prostate.
“This is very advanced. I’m surprised it wasn’t caught sooner, especially given the level of medical care available,” said Siegel.
Prostate cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer when detected early, underscoring the importance of regular screenings for men in at-risk age groups.
