Flight Chaos at Newark Airport as Delays and Cancellations Pile Up
Travelers passing through Newark Liberty International Airport have faced major disruptions over the past few days, as hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled due to a mix of staffing shortages, runway repairs, and technical issues.
The trouble began Thursday and stretched into Friday, with the airport reporting widespread delays. According to flight tracking service FlightAware, 114 flights were delayed and 18 canceled on Friday alone. The day before, over 600 flights were affected—more than 200 canceled and 400 delayed.
Passengers were urged to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Newark officials pointed to several causes, including a critical shortage of air traffic controllers, malfunctioning equipment, and ongoing construction on a key runway.
“One of our runways is closed for necessary repairs from now until mid-June 2025,” Newark Liberty shared on social media. “We are working with our airline partners to minimize the impacts.”
The airport responded directly to concerned travelers online, citing continued challenges with air traffic control staffing and encouraging passengers to stay updated through their airlines.
These disruptions followed earlier issues in the week when flights were slowed due to an equipment malfunction at the Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control, which manages flights for the region. As a result, United Airlines was forced to divert 35 flights on Monday.
Although the technical problems were eventually resolved, staffing concerns continue to pose challenges. The Federal Aviation Administration is reportedly still working to close a gap of around 3,500 air traffic control positions.
With runway construction expected to last until mid-2025 and staffing issues ongoing, travelers using Newark in the coming months may want to prepare for continued delays.
