In a recent Vanity Fair interview, Lizzo opened up about the deeper meaning behind her music — and stirred up some controversy along the way.

Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, Lizzo explained that her music is a form of healing, deeply rooted in her experience as a Black woman. She emphasized that while her sound blends pop, R&B, hip-hop, and gospel, her primary focus is to speak to Black women, who she feels need messages of self-love and empowerment the most.

Though Lizzo has fans from all walks of life, her comments sparked criticism from some who felt excluded. Lizzo, however, said she finds the backlash confusing, explaining that her work simply reflects who she is — and that celebrating her own identity shouldn’t be seen as excluding others.

She also used the interview to highlight broader social issues, such as the treatment of Black women in America and the lasting impact of white male dominance in the industry and society at large.

Lizzo’s activism speaks just as loudly as her music. After Roe v. Wade was overturned, she donated $500,000 to Planned Parenthood — a donation that was matched by her tour promoter.

Through it all, Lizzo remains committed to using her platform to promote self-love, justice, and equality, no matter who’s listening.
