The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, recently exposed massive spending on credit cards across the federal government last year. The department is reportedly seeking to “simplify” the federal government’s credit card program, which was found to have spent $40 billion throughout the 2024 fiscal year.
The official DOGE account wrote, “The US government currently has ~4.6M active credit cards/accounts, which processed ~90M unique transactions for ~$40B of spend in FY24.” The department noted it is currently seeking to cut back on these costs. “DOGE is working w/ the agencies to simplify the program and reduce admin costs – we will report back in 1 week,” the post concluded.
The findings, communicated directly via X, sparked discussion among conservatives. One person wrote, “Why do we have so many different departments? All we need is like a department of defense, dept of Health, dept of justice, dept of agriculture and dept of health and human services and Energy! That’s about it!”
Some threw out suggestions of entire agencies that should be eliminated. Another user pondered, “I don’t understand why nobody is talking about getting rid if the department of energy. Jimmy Carter started the department of energy in the 1970’s. It’s job was to decrease the cost of energy. It totally failed, but has grown to a monumental size.”
One user commented, “Whoa…how is it that we are all just now finding out about this MASSIVE amount of waste and corruption???Was there absolutely NO ONE from the tens of thousands of federal workers who was willing to come. forward with this information at some point in the past?? It seriously took an audit for this to come out? The first audit ever? Seriously???
Another user said, “Yes, the government credit card program. That is a racket with too many hands in the pot. I’m surprised it’s not more than 4.6 million. As a former government credit card holder for the department of defense and the department of energy there’s a lot of room for improvement.”
On pre-election comments from Musk on the campaign trail illustrating the “staggering” waste of taxpayers’ dollars at the federal level, which DOGE is now seeking to correct. “The amount of waste that happens with the federal government is really staggering. It’s a staggering amount of waste of taxpayer money,” he said.
“We have to say, Well, what does this do for the citizens of America? How is this good for people in America? That’s it’s their money,” he said, emphasizing that government must serve the taxpayers. “For some weird reason, a lot of people in the state, or whatever the politicians, they seem to forget that money being spent is, is your money.”
“And if it’s not spending, being spent in a way that is beneficial to the American people, it’s a misuse of the funds. I mean, there’s this, there’s a lot of money that’s being spent where we’re sort of illegals are getting more benefits than citizens like that that doesn’t make any sense,” Musk said, further highlighting vast problems at hand.
