The Wisconsin Supreme Court has issued an administrative order temporarily relieving Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan of her judicial duties.
According to the court’s statement, Judge Dugan is “temporarily prohibited from exercising the powers of a circuit court judge in the State of Wisconsin” pending further notice. The Wisconsin Court System confirmed that her current caseload will be reassigned to other judges.
This action follows Dugan’s arrest on Friday, where she was charged with obstruction of an official procedure and with hiding a person to avoid detection and arrest, according to a criminal complaint. She is scheduled to appear in federal court on May 15.
The charges stem from an incident on April 18, when federal agents attempted to detain a man following his appearance in Dugan’s courtroom on unrelated charges. Authorities allege that Dugan helped the individual and his attorney exit the courthouse through a restricted area, avoiding contact with federal officers.
The judge appeared in court on Friday but did not make a public statement. Her attorney stated that Dugan “regrets and protests her arrest,” maintaining that the actions were not taken with harmful intent.
The matter is under federal review, and further court proceedings will determine any legal consequences. The Wisconsin Supreme Court has not announced when or if Judge Dugan may resume her judicial responsibilities.
