Monica Crowley, a longtime media personality and former Treasury official, has been confirmed as Assistant Secretary of State and Chief of Protocol, a position that holds the rank of ambassador. The Senate approved her appointment by a vote of 52-45.

Crowley brings a wealth of experience in communications, foreign affairs, and public service. She previously served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Public Affairs and was recognized with the Alexander Hamilton Award—the department’s highest honor—for her contributions during that tenure.

In her new role, Crowley will serve as the Administration’s official representative at major U.S.-hosted events, including the nation’s 250th birthday celebrations in 2026, the FIFA World Cup in the same year, and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

A bestselling author and seasoned broadcaster, Crowley began her television career in 1996. She earned her Ph.D. in international relations from Columbia University, along with two master’s degrees, and completed her undergraduate studies at Colgate University.

Her new appointment marks a return to public service in a high-profile diplomatic capacity. As Chief of Protocol, Crowley will be responsible for managing state visits, diplomatic ceremonies, and liaising with foreign dignitaries—an important role in maintaining global relationships and representing U.S. interests with formality and diplomacy.
