Discussions are underway among congressional leaders on how to proceed with a new investigation into the events of January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol.

According to individuals familiar with the talks, House leadership and members of the investigative team are considering a revised approach to the inquiry. Some favor narrowing the scope of the previous investigation, while others advocate for a more expansive review, including broader assessments of security readiness and future improvements at the Capitol.

A new select subcommittee was announced earlier this year to take on the task. However, internal deliberations on the committee’s authority, structure, and areas of focus have delayed its launch.

Rep. Barry Loudermilk, who has been named to lead the investigation, stated that he accepted the role on the condition that the inquiry would be conducted independently and have adequate resources. He noted the importance of reporting findings directly to the public and emphasized the need for a full understanding of the events and security breakdowns surrounding the incident.

“I was asked to lead an investigation into the Capitol’s security response and prior review efforts,” Loudermilk said in a recent statement. “To be effective, the process must be thorough and objective.”

The investigation may not revisit all aspects explored by previous congressional panels, and sources indicated the final version could place more emphasis on institutional security procedures rather than individual accountability.

Plans for formalizing the new committee are still being finalized. One potential outcome could include adjustments to how members are selected and how the committee will operate.

Leadership has publicly committed to fully funding the investigation. The aim is to examine the circumstances surrounding January 6 while also identifying opportunities to improve Capitol security for the future.
