During a recent appearance on a late-night talk show, California Senator Adam Schiff shared a personal experience that has shaped his views on public safety in the state.

Schiff recalled an incident from two years ago when his luggage was stolen out of his car while visiting San Francisco. “They tell you not to leave your luggage in the car, and the one time I did, it was stolen,” he said.

The senator noted that his experience is not unique, and acknowledged that growing public concern over theft and organized retail crime needs to be addressed. “We’re going to have to change how we do business in California. We have to address people’s legitimate concerns about crime,” he stated.

Retail theft has become a rising concern across parts of California, with some stores locking everyday items behind glass due to repeat thefts. Schiff described a visit to a Target store where basic items like shampoo were secured, and he joked that he had to use a Target shopping bag as temporary luggage after the theft.

He recounted a conversation with a cashier who shared frustrations about the state of crime and its impact on daily life. Schiff acknowledged that public dissatisfaction reflects broader issues that need attention.

His comments come amid growing dialogue about how cities and states should respond to crime while balancing reforms and community safety. While not offering specific policy proposals, Schiff emphasized the need for practical solutions and better responsiveness to public concerns.
