The Holy Items Inside Pope Francis’ Casket: A Testament to Humility and Legacy

As the world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, the images of his final resting place reveal far more than just a departure. His casket, simple yet deeply symbolic, is a reflection of the values he championed throughout his life—humility, simplicity, and a deep commitment to serving the marginalized.

Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 following a stroke and a prolonged battle with pneumonia, had requested a departure from the centuries-old traditions of the Vatican. His final resting place serves as a poignant reminder of the profound changes he introduced to the Catholic Church, focusing on a more accessible and compassionate faith. Here’s a look at the items placed with him in his casket, each holding significant meaning.

What’s Inside the Pope’s Casket?

On Tuesday, the Vatican shared the first images of Pope Francis lying in repose, and the contents of his casket speak volumes about his life and legacy.

  1. The Rosary – Placed gently into his hands, the rosary represents his lifelong devotion to prayer and reflection, a cornerstone of his papacy.
  2. The Mitre and Crozier – His papal hat and pastoral staff were placed inside the casket, symbols of his leadership and authority as the Vicar of Christ.
  3. Minted Coins – A collection of coins minted during his papacy is a centuries-old tradition, reflecting his time as pope and his unique contributions to the Church.
  4. The Rogito – A sealed legal document summarizing his life and papacy, the rogito is a tradition for the late pontiff. It is placed within the casket as a formal record of his time as the leader of the Catholic Church.
  5. The Broken Fisherman’s Ring – The Fisherman’s Ring, an important symbol of the pope’s authority, is ceremonially destroyed before burial. The ring, once used to seal papal documents, is broken to signify the end of a pope’s reign and to ensure it cannot be misused after death.

A Look at the Pope’s Simple Coffin

Pope Francis’s choice of a simple wooden coffin lined with zinc marks a stark departure from past papal funerals. Unlike previous popes, such as the late Pope Benedict, who were buried in elaborate triple coffins made of cypress, lead, and oak, Francis opted for a modest structure that reflects his lifelong commitment to humility.

In an even more striking break from tradition, Pope Francis’s body will lie in repose with the casket lid removed, allowing mourners to pay their respects in a more personal and intimate way. For the first time in over a century, a pope will be buried outside of the Vatican, as Pope Francis requested to be laid to rest at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome’s Esquilino neighborhood—a place that held personal significance for him.

The Funeral Details: When and Where

The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis’s funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26 at 10 AM local time in St. Peter’s Square. After the public ceremony, his body will be transported to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, where he will be laid to rest.

Starting Wednesday, Pope Francis’s body will lie in state in St. Peter’s Basilica, where the solemn chant of the Litany of Saints will fill the air. Unlike past traditions, his simple coffin will rest at floor level, facing the pews, with a Paschal candle placed nearby—a quiet symbol of faith and light.

A Legacy Defined by Simplicity and Compassion

Pope Francis’s decision to forgo the grand, elaborate ceremonial traditions for his funeral reflects the very principles he lived by. His humble wooden coffin, the choice to have his body lie in state without an elevated bier, and his decision to be buried outside the Vatican, all embody his message of compassion, simplicity, and connection with the people.

In death, as in life, Pope Francis chose to break with tradition in favor of a more personal, accessible, and humble approach. It’s these choices, more than any grand procession, that will define his legacy and continue to inspire those who seek a world defined by love, service, and humility.
