They Damaged My Motorcycle While I Was Saying Goodbye to My Wife

The day I buried my wife should’ve been about grief, love, and memory. Instead, it was also about cruelty.

While I stood in a church saying goodbye to Barbara—my wife of 50 years—someone vandalized my Harley in the parking lot. A sign taped to the seat read:
“BIKER TRASH GET OUT.”

This wasn’t a random act. It was personal.

We had moved to Cedar Hills six months earlier, when Barbara’s cancer returned. She wanted peace, and I wanted whatever she needed. But from the moment we arrived, I could feel it—this was the kind of neighborhood that liked its rules neat and its residents even neater. My Harley wasn’t welcome, and neither was I. Especially not by Howard, the HOA president, who never missed a chance to make that clear.

Barbara, though—she never asked me to change. Not in half a century. She loved the sound of the bike, the freedom it represented. On the day of her funeral, I rode it there, just like she would’ve wanted.

But after the service, I found my bike on its side. Scratched. Defaced. Humiliated.
Neighbors stood around pretending to be surprised. But one face wasn’t pretending—Howard’s. He stood across the lot, smirking.

I picked the bike up and rode home, damage and all. Because sometimes, the road is the only place that still makes sense.

Later that day, at the post-funeral gathering, Howard approached me. Calm. Casual. Condescending.
“Maybe it’s time to consider something more fitting for the neighborhood,” he said.

I looked him straight in the eye.
“Someone here vandalized my bike during my wife’s funeral,” I said.
“And I always find out who’s done me wrong.”
