The skit in question, originally aired in 2016, featured Hanks portraying “Doug,” a white Trump supporter, during a parody segment of “Black Jeopardy!”
In the sketch, Hanks’ character surprises everyone by correctly answering questions typically aligned with African American cultural experiences—creating a comedic twist that highlighted unexpected common ground. But the tone shifted at the end when Doug suggested the idea of a “White Jeopardy,” a joke that many viewers found problematic. The punchline, intended to poke fun at racial stereotypes and political divides, didn’t sit well with many conservative viewers.
Following the anniversary airing, critics from the MAGA community voiced outrage online. Conservative commentator Benny Johnson called the skit “tone-deaf and insulting,” while influencer Mario Nawfal argued it pushed outdated stereotypes about Trump voters. They claimed the sketch unfairly portrayed Trump supporters as ignorant or bigoted, especially at a time when more minority voters are reportedly aligning with Republican candidates.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s aide, Link Lauren, also chimed in, saying the portrayal was offensive and divisive.
