Unity, Service, and National Challenges

In his farewell address to the U.S. Senate, longtime public servant Mitt Romney urged lawmakers and citizens alike to prioritize unity, character, and long-term responsibility over division and short-term politics.

“My life’s work has been a group affair,” he reflected, noting that while he felt a sense of accomplishment, he also recognized that some hopes went unfulfilled—especially efforts to address the national debt.

Romney stressed the consequences of America’s growing fiscal burden, saying the country is at risk of becoming “debt poor.” He suggested that without such financial strain, significantly more resources could be directed toward national defense or social services.

He also shared personal observations from his years in public service: “The biggest surprise in the Senate has been how much I enjoy the other senators on both sides of the aisle,” while acknowledging some frustrations with procedural inefficiencies.

Romney emphasized the importance of national character and civic virtue, calling on Americans to maintain compassion, respect, and unity. “A country’s character is a reflection not just of its elected officials but also of its people,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, he paid tribute to his home state of Utah and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve. “I leave Washington to return to be one among them and hope to be a voice of unity and virtue,” he said.
