They Left Me in the Hospital Garage While They Met the Baby — I Was Holding Him When They Came Down

Room 411 had nobody in it but Nkechi and the baby.

The six of them had gone down to the cafeteria at two o’clock.

They had been eating lunch on the first floor of that building, three floors below my head, for forty minutes.

Nkechi had been awake since four in the morning and had just had a baby and she looked at me in that doorway and started to cry.

She said, “They told me you couldn’t come.”

She had been asking for me since one o’clock.

She is twenty-eight years old and she had been told her husband’s grandmother was not well enough to make the trip.

I had driven my own van to that hospital.

Prudence wheeled me alongside the bed and put the brakes on and Nkechi handed me that child without being asked.

Seven pounds and one ounce. Wendell.

I had him for fifty-five minutes.

I gave Nkechi the blanket and she put it over her knees and we talked about her mother, who is in Lagos and could not come, and about nothing at all.

And at half past three she picked up her telephone and took a photograph of me holding him, without my asking her to.

She put it in the family group chat herself.

I did not know she had done it. I was looking at the baby.

She told me afterwards that she wrote one line under it.

“Grandma Theo made it up after all.”

Nobody answered it.

Eleven messages about his hair, and then a photograph of a seventy-nine-year-old woman in a wheelchair holding him, and then nothing at all from any of the six of them.

Rosalind came back up to room 411 at four minutes past five.

She had her car keys in her hand because she was on her way down to get me.

She stopped in that doorway and she did not say my name.

What she said was: “Who brought you up here?”

Not how long have you been here. Not I’m sorry.

Who brought you up here.

Because the only thing that had gone wrong, from where she was standing in that doorway, was that somebody had helped me.

I told her the name of the man and the floor he works on, and I said it in front of Nkechi and in front of Prudence, who was writing on the chart by the window.

And Prudence stopped writing and said, without turning round, “He did exactly the right thing and I’ll be putting that in writing.”

That is the moment it ended.

Not anything I said. A midwife with a biro, not turning round.

I wheeled myself out of that hospital at twenty to six.

Benedito was at the booth on level one. I stopped and I shook his hand and I asked him for his supervisor’s name.

He went a bit grey and said, “Ma’am, am I in trouble.”

I wrote four hundred words that night and posted it to the hospital and copied it to the parking contractor.

He has a letter in his file now and he sent me a photograph of it.

Nineteen years and it is the first one.

Rosalind and I have spoken twice since. Both times about arrangements.

She has not said the word sorry and I have stopped waiting in a car park for her, in every sense I can manage.

Nkechi sends me a photograph of Wendell every Sunday night without fail.

Eleven Sundays now.

And the photograph from room 411 is the one on my wall, in a frame, by the door, where I see it on my way out.

A girl of twenty-eight who had been awake since four in the morning was the only person in that building who thought to take it.
