They Left Me in the Hospital Garage While They Met the Baby — I Was Holding Him When They Came Down

My daughter parked my wheelchair van on level three of the hospital garage and told me there wasn’t room in the elevator for the chair with everybody else in it, so I sat in that car for two hours and forty minutes while my family met my first great-grandson — and when the six of them came down at ten past five, the wheelchair was gone from the back, and the photograph of me holding that baby had been in the family group chat since half past three.

She said it kindly. I want that on the record because it matters.

“Mom, it’s one elevator and there’s six of us. Give us forty minutes and I’ll come down and get you.”

Forty minutes.

I had the flowers on my lap. I had the blanket I started in July.

I said all right.

My name is Theodora Wrenfield-Agyeman. I’m seventy-nine.

I have used a chair since my left hip gave out in 2023. I am not ill. I can transfer myself. I can wheel myself the length of a shopping centre and I do it every Friday.

The chair folds in eleven seconds. I have timed it, because people keep deciding it is complicated.

Rosalind is fifty-two. She is my daughter.

My grandson Caspian and his wife Nkechi had the baby at four minutes past eleven that morning.

Seven pounds and one ounce. They named him Wendell, after my husband.

I was told that on the telephone at twenty past eleven, and I was dressed and ready at the door at twenty to twelve.

Here is the thing about that elevator.

It is a hospital. It is a maternity floor. The elevators in that building are built to take a bed with four people walking beside it.

There are four of them in that lobby and they run every ninety seconds.

Nobody has to choose between a grandmother and a cousin.

What was actually true is that there were six of them and they had been standing in that garage for nine minutes already, and getting my chair out of the back and unfolding it and getting me into it takes about four.

Four minutes.

At half past one I sent Rosalind a message asking how he was.

At ten past two I sent another one.

At twenty to three the group chat started going, because somebody had put a photograph in it, and then everybody was answering the photograph.

Eleven messages about how much hair he had.

I was in a concrete garage on level three with the window down four inches.

I am going to tell you the part I have not told my family.

At about twenty past two I stopped being angry and started being something else, and that something else was the worst twenty minutes I have had since Wendell died.

Because I worked out, sitting there, that this was not an accident of logistics.

This was a decision somebody made in nine seconds in a garage, and six adults went along with it, and not one of them came back down.

Then a man knocked on my window.

His name is Benedito and he is a parking attendant at that hospital and he has worked there nineteen years.

He asked me if I was waiting for somebody, and I said yes, and he looked at my face and then he looked at the folded chair in the back of that van.

And he said: “Ma’am, how long have you been sitting here.”

I said since twelve.

He did not say anything about my family. Not one word, then or later, and I have thought about that a great deal.

He opened the back of the van and he got my chair out and unfolded it and he did it right, with the brakes on, like a man who has done it a thousand times.

Then he pushed me to the service lift at the far end of level three.

He took me up to the fourth floor and along to the desk, and he said to the woman there, “This is the baby’s great-grandmother.”

And a midwife named Prudence came round that desk and put her hand on my arm and asked me which room I wanted.
