Hunter Biden has asked a federal judge to dismiss his lawsuit against a former White House aide, citing ongoing financial hardship and personal challenges. The case, which involved the distribution of information believed to have come from a personal laptop, has been formally withdrawn.
In a court filing submitted to a federal court in California, Biden’s legal team said his income has “dropped significantly” and that he is facing considerable debt, including costs related to recent damage to his rental home caused by wildfires in the Pacific Palisades area.
The filing stated that Biden is now focused on securing permanent housing, relocating his family, and managing living expenses. His attorneys noted that these priorities have made it difficult to continue with the ongoing litigation.
The lawsuit, originally filed in September 2023, alleged that Garrett Ziegler and his organization, Marco Polo, had violated privacy laws by creating a searchable online database of over 128,000 emails reportedly linked to Biden.
Though a judge had previously allowed the case to move forward, Biden’s legal team has now requested that the suit be dismissed.
In a supporting statement, Biden explained that financial pressures—including a lack of new income from his artwork and speaking engagements—have made continuing the case unrealistic. He said that, although he had previously earned income through art sales and a memoir, those revenue streams have since declined. Biden said he sold 27 art pieces in prior years, averaging $54,500 each, but recently sold only one piece for $36,000.
Biden also cited difficulties borrowing money and confirmed that he is currently unable to take on new legal expenses.
In a related move earlier this week, Biden also withdrew a separate lawsuit against two IRS whistleblowers. The case had alleged that the agents improperly disclosed private tax information, but Biden’s team filed a motion to dismiss the complaint with prejudice—meaning it cannot be filed again.
After the dismissal, the agents involved stated that they believed the lawsuit had been an attempt to silence their testimony and said they had hoped for a full hearing in court.
Meanwhile, legal matters involving Biden continue to unfold in other areas, including federal charges related to past tax filings and firearms possession. Sentencing and further legal proceedings are pending.
