In April 2021, a dog named Buddy was the victim of a horrifying act of abuse. Once described as a happy, gentle pup, Buddy was found with his face severely burned and an extension cord tightly wrapped around his neck. The damage was shocking, and it left many heartbroken.
According to reports, a child later admitted to the act. But because the child was under the age of 12, they couldn’t be prosecuted under Mississippi law.
Thankfully, Buddy was rescued and taken in by the Tunica Humane Society, where he began the long journey to healing. He received advanced medical care from Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, including bandage treatments, skin grafts, and constant monitoring.
Despite the pain, Buddy’s spirit remained strong.
“He continues to move forward daily,” the Humane Society shared. “Never once disappointing his doctors.”
One of the most hopeful signs came when vets discovered Buddy had not lost his vision — a miracle considering the extent of his injuries. Over time, the bandages began to come off, his skin began to heal, and his cheerful personality started to shine through again.
In a major milestone, Buddy opened his eyes for the first time in over three months — without heavy sedation. His rescuers were thrilled to report that yes, Buddy can still see.
“He is happy and playful and walking the halls of the hospital with a great big ball in his mouth,” said Sandy Williams, the rescue’s director. “He loves balls. He carries them around so everyone can see.”
Buddy still needs special care. His skin is sensitive, he may need eye drops, and he can’t spend too much time in the sun. But his recovery has been nothing short of amazing.
