The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released new details about a series of immigration enforcement operations conducted in Los Angeles beginning June 6. According to officials, the operations led to the arrest of hundreds of individuals, including 19 who were identified as having previous convictions for serious crimes such as robbery, sexual assault, and homicide.

The arrests occurred amid ongoing protests in downtown Los Angeles, where public demonstrations escalated over the weekend. The protests were in response to the recent immigration enforcement actions, prompting heightened concern from both law enforcement and local officials.

In a statement, DHS said, “ICE officers are working to remove individuals with serious criminal records from our communities,” and emphasized that the operations were part of ongoing efforts to enforce existing immigration laws.

The department provided details on several individuals taken into custody, including:

• Lionel Sanchez-Laguna, 55, of Mexico, with a record including firearm charges, battery, and DUI.
• Cuong Chanh Phan, 49, of Vietnam, convicted of second-degree murder in a 1994 gang-related shooting.
• Cielo Vivar-Ubaldo, a Mexican national with prior convictions for sex with a minor and narcotics violations.
• Jose Cristobal Hernandez-Buitron, 43, of Peru, previously convicted of robbery.
• Julian Riveros-Cadavid, from Colombia, with prior arrests for domestic battery, child endangerment, and grand theft.
• Rolando Veneracion-Enriquez, 55, of the Philippines, with convictions related to sexual assault and burglary.
• Victor Mendoza-Aguilar, 32, of Mexico, with a record including drug possession and assault with a deadly weapon.
• Armando Ordaz, 44, of Mexico, with convictions for sexual battery and theft.

In total, ICE indicated that dozens of the individuals arrested during these operations had significant criminal records and were either previously deported or had violated conditions of their immigration status.

Amid the unrest, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco spoke publicly about the challenges law enforcement faces during such operations. “A lawful society depends on upholding the rule of law,” Bianco stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order during protests.

Tensions remain high in the region, with demonstrations continuing and citywide curfews being enacted to ensure public safety. Federal and local officials have urged the public to remain peaceful and respect law enforcement efforts during this period of increased activity.
