The Cry From Upstairs
Russell Hargrove heard the scream before he even reached the staircase.
It wasn’t the normal cry of a tired child.
It was sharp.
Panicked.
Desperate.
The kind of cry that makes a parent’s blood turn cold.
Russell dropped his briefcase by the front door and ran upstairs two steps at a time. His heart pounded violently against his ribs as he rushed toward the nursery.
By the time he reached the door, his hands were already shaking.
He pushed it open.
And froze.
Three-year-old Theo sat on the floor in his yellow pajamas, crying so hard he could barely breathe.
Beside him lay Naomi Keller — the nanny who had cared for him since he was barely a year old.
She wasn’t moving.
Her body was stretched across the nursery rug, one arm twisted beneath her as if she had fallen suddenly and never gotten back up.
“Naomi!” Russell shouted.
He dropped to his knees.
Theo’s face was wet with tears. Faint red marks circled the boy’s neck.
But he was breathing.
Naomi wasn’t responding.
Russell pressed trembling fingers against her neck until he finally felt a weak pulse.
On the floor beside them sat a damp washcloth… a blinking thermometer…
And a tiny blue plastic wheel from a broken toy.
Russell grabbed his phone and called emergency services, struggling to explain what he was seeing.
Moments later, the bedroom door opened.
Darlene Pike, the house manager, rushed inside.
“Oh my goodness,” she gasped. “Mr. Hargrove… what happened?”
“I don’t know!” Russell said, his voice cracking. “I just heard Theo screaming and found them like this!”
Darlene’s eyes moved slowly from Naomi… to the crying child… then back to Russell.
Her voice softened.
“I’ve been worried about Naomi lately.”
Russell barely heard her.
Sirens were already echoing outside the mansion.
Within minutes, paramedics rushed up the stairs.
And what they discovered next would change everything Russell believed about the woman lying unconscious on his nursery floor.
