Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she has not heard back from the U.S. Department of Justice after sending a formal letter seeking clarity on whether she is under federal investigation.
In a recent exchange with a Capitol Hill reporter, the New York congresswoman confirmed she had asked the DOJ for clarification but had received no response. The questions center around a “Know Your Rights” webinar she hosted earlier this year, aimed at educating undocumented immigrants about their legal protections during encounters with U.S. immigration authorities.
The bilingual webinar, held in English and Spanish, included legal advice and downloadable materials. Among them were instructions explaining that ICE agents must present a judge-signed warrant to enter a home, as well as resources for finding free legal assistance and submitting privacy forms to her office for help in immigration-related matters.
While Rep. Ocasio-Cortez defends the event as an exercise in public education and First Amendment rights, some officials, including former acting ICE director Tom Homan, have suggested her efforts could interfere with law enforcement. Homan has said he raised the issue with the Deputy Attorney General, asking for guidance on whether her actions might legally constitute an impediment to immigration enforcement.
In response, Ocasio-Cortez wrote a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, expressing concern that the DOJ might be influenced by political pressure. She called suggestions of legal consequences “politically motivated” and argued that informing the public of their rights is both legal and essential.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation from the DOJ regarding an investigation.
