Most people go to the zoo expecting a calm day of animal watching. But for one visitor back in 1990, the day turned into a life-or-death rescue mission — and he didn’t hesitate to act.
Rick Swope, a 33-year-old truck driver visiting the Detroit Zoo with his wife and three kids, ended up saving a chimpanzee from drowning in a dramatic and risky moment that left onlookers stunned.
A Dangerous Situation Unfolds
The incident occurred when a chimpanzee named Jo-Jo fell into a man-made moat in the zoo’s chimpanzee exhibit. He had been chased by another, more aggressive chimp and ended up in the water — clearly panicked and struggling to keep his head above the surface.
About 10 spectators watched helplessly as Jo-Jo flailed, with no zookeepers jumping in to help. But Rick Swope couldn’t just stand by.
Against the Odds, He Jumped In
Without hesitation, Rick climbed over the fence and dove into the enclosure, knowing full well that chimpanzees are incredibly strong — up to five times stronger than a human — and that the area was home to several others who could have turned aggressive at any moment.
Despite the danger, Rick reached Jo-Jo. At first, he lost his grip and Jo-Jo slipped under the water. But Rick went in again, managed to pull the 200-pound chimp to safety, and got him to dry land.
“I Think He Knew”
Jo-Jo was in rough shape, but he was alive — thanks to Rick’s incredible bravery.
“He was looking at me,” Rick later told the Chicago Tribune. “I think he knew what was going on.”
A Lasting Impact
Though this event happened decades ago, the story continues to inspire. It raises important questions about zoo enclosures, emergency protocols, and how far one person is willing to go to help another living being — even one from a different species.
