Former FBI Director Comey Under Scrutiny for Controversial Social Media Post

Former FBI Director James Comey is facing scrutiny following a recent Instagram post that some interpreted as a potential threat against former President Donald Trump. The matter is now reportedly being reviewed by federal authorities, with interim U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro potentially playing a role in any prosecutorial decisions.

The controversy began when Comey shared a photo of seashells arranged on a beach to form the numbers “86 47.” The number “86” has, in some contexts, been linked to slang for removing or eliminating something, while “47” was widely interpreted as a reference to Trump, the 47th U.S. president.

Comey deleted the post shortly after sharing it and issued a clarification. “I posted earlier a picture of some shells I saw today on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message,” he wrote. “I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me, but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”

Despite the clarification, the U.S. Secret Service interviewed Comey about the post. Reports indicate that the meeting lasted approximately 70 minutes. At this time, no formal charges have been announced.

The Department of Justice, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, would determine whether to proceed with any legal action. If charges were filed, newly appointed interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro could oversee the case.

FBI Director Kash Patel acknowledged the situation in a statement, noting that the FBI is coordinating with the Secret Service, which has primary jurisdiction over investigating threats against former presidents.

“This matter is being reviewed carefully, and we are supporting the lead investigative agency as needed,” Patel said.

Comey, who served as FBI Director from 2013 until his dismissal in 2017, has been a public figure frequently involved in political discussions since leaving the role.

As the investigation progresses, legal experts and public officials continue to debate the implications of symbolic speech, free expression, and the standards used to assess potential threats involving public figures. No further developments have been confirmed at this time.
