Found a Tick in Your Home? Here’s What to Do (Especially if You Have Pets)

“Can anyone tell if this is a tick? I just found two of these in my living room where my dog hangs out. Is my house infested?”

You’re not alone in asking this. Ticks are small, stealthy parasites that can sneak into our homes—often hitching a ride on pets or clothing. And yes, they can pose real health risks.

Ticks are known to transmit dangerous diseases like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and tularemia. So, if you’ve found one (or more), it’s important to act quickly.

Step 1: Identify the Bug

Some insects resemble ticks but aren’t harmful. To be sure:

  • Take a clear, close-up photo.

  • Compare it to images of common tick species (like deer ticks or dog ticks).

  • If in doubt, reach out to your vet, a pest control expert, or your local public health department.

Step 2: Check Your Pets and Home

Since ticks often enter with pets:

  • Inspect your dog (and other pets) thoroughly—behind ears, under collars, between toes, etc.

  • Vacuum your home, especially areas your pet frequents.

  • Wash pet bedding in hot water.

  • Consider using a flea and tick treatment if your pet isn’t already on one.

Step 3: Safe Tick Removal

If a tick is attached to skin (yours or your pet’s):

  • Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool.

  • Grasp the tick close to the skin and pull straight out. Don’t twist or crush.

  • Clean the bite area with soap and water or antiseptic.

Then, watch for symptoms—rashes, fever, joint pain, or fatigue may indicate a tick-borne illness. When in doubt, contact a healthcare provider or vet.

Could It Be an Infestation?

Finding one or two ticks indoors doesn’t always mean an infestation—but it’s a red flag. If ticks continue to appear:

  • Call a pest control professional.

  • Consider having your yard treated, especially if it borders woods or tall grass.

Final Thought

Ticks may be small, but the risks they carry aren’t. Quick action, smart prevention, and knowing the signs can protect both you and your furry friend from harm.
