If You Find Ticks Inside Your Home Here’s What You Should Do

I like to think I’m pretty tolerant when it comes to creepy crawlies. Spiders and snakes? No problem. But there’s one creature I just can’t stand: ticks.

Honestly, I wouldn’t shed a tear if ticks disappeared forever. They’re not just irritating — they’re dangerous. Ticks can spread serious diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. In short: you definitely don’t want them inside your home.

Depending on where you live, the time of year, and whether you have pets, the chances of encountering ticks indoors can be pretty high.
So, if you do spot one, here’s what you need to know:

Step 1: Identify and Isolate the Problem

First, try to figure out what kind of tick you’re dealing with (for example: black-legged tick, dog tick, or brown dog tick).
If you find the tick in a specific area, keep pets and children away until you can deal with it.

Step 2: Protect Yourself

Before handling a tick, protect yourself. Wear gloves and long sleeves to avoid giving it a chance to latch onto your skin.

Step 3: Clean Thoroughly

Wash any clothing, bedding, or fabrics the tick may have touched using high heat.
Vacuum the area carefully, paying extra attention to corners, crevices, and hidden spots where ticks like to hide.

Step 4: Remove the Tick Properly

Use a pair of fine-tipped tweezers to grab the tick as close to your skin as possible.
Pull slowly and steadily upward. Avoid twisting or jerking — you want to remove the whole tick, not leave the head behind.

After you remove the tick, clean the bite area (and your hands) with alcohol or soapy water.
You can kill the tick by putting it in alcohol or flushing it down the toilet.

Step 5: Monitor the Bite

Keep an eye on any bite marks. Watch for signs of infection or symptoms like a rash, fever, or joint pain — all of which can indicate a tick-borne illness.

Hopefully this guide helps you stay safe and tick-free!
