When rescuers first found him, he looked nothing like a bear.
He was small, sick, and hairless — cowering in a crate, staring down at his too-big paws. The little black bear cub had been found alone in El Dorado County, California, fighting to survive. He was orphaned, starving, dehydrated, anemic, and suffering from a painful skin infection.
For the wildlife experts at Gold Country Wildlife Rescue (GCWR) in North Auburn, it was one of the toughest sights they’d seen.
“It was heartbreaking to see a bear cub in such terrible condition,” said Chelsea Engberg, GCWR’s marketing and outreach manager.
Despite the odds, the team sprang into action. At just 20 pounds, the cub had a long road ahead. But GCWR had a plan — and more importantly, they had hope.
A Long Road to Healing
Slowly but surely, the little cub began to heal.
It started with something small: a bit of fuzz growing on his face.
“It might not seem like a big change,” GCWR wrote in a Facebook post, “but seeing fur fuzz grow is an exciting next step in his healing journey.”
With careful treatment and lots of love — from nutritious food to cozy bedding and medical care — the cub began to transform. And as his health improved, his personality came out. He splashed in his kiddie pool, climbed on his firehose hammock, and played like the wild bear he was born to be.
The rescue team kept their distance, making sure he stayed wary of humans — just as he should.
A New Beginning
By February 2025, the difference was astonishing. The once-sick, hairless cub now looked like a healthy, vibrant bear.
“We are always amazed by the wild animals in our care, but this bear cub is one of the most amazing recoveries we have seen,” Engberg said.
His journey wasn’t just about physical recovery — it was about resilience, survival, and second chances.
Though many hoped he’d return to the wild, experts from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) ultimately decided it would be safest to place him in a sanctuary where he can live out his life in comfort and care.
The Happy Update
On May 13, 2025, GCWR shared a heartwarming update on Facebook — along with a photo that stunned supporters.
“Can you believe this is how he’s looking now?” they wrote. “If you’ve not seen this cub before, he came to us late last year sick and almost completely without fur.”
Now, he’s almost unrecognizable — healthy, strong, and covered in thick fur. He’ll soon receive his final check-up and vaccinations before heading off to his forever sanctuary home.
“The fact that he’s regrown so much of his fur and is staying wild, not interested in humans, makes everyone here proud every day,” Engberg said.

“His story highlights the value of collaborative care in wildlife rehabilitation,” said Dana Fasolette, Director of Animal Care at GCWR.
