Most people might mark their 40th wedding anniversary with a beach vacation or a fancy dinner. But for South African couple Marius and Michelle Nortje, the best way to celebrate was in nature — inside the wild heart of Kruger National Park.
Longtime visitors to the park, the couple expected another peaceful drive among the animals. What they didn’t expect was a moment that would not only leave them speechless but also touch hearts around the world.
“We go at least once a year, sometimes up to four,” Marius told The Citizen. But during their anniversary trip this past December, something unforgettable happened.
As they drove along a gravel road, three giraffes stepped out of the bush. One of them immediately stood out. Marius, an experienced wildlife photographer, noticed unusual growths covering the giraffe’s body.
“We saw strange lumps all over her,” he recalled. “It looked painful, but she was grazing peacefully.”
Marius quickly captured the moment with his camera and later shared the images on Facebook. The response was instant — people were fascinated, concerned, and eager to know what was wrong.
The Medical Mystery
The photos soon caught the attention of WorldWide Vets, an international animal welfare group. According to their founder, Dr. Gemna Campling, the giraffe was suffering from a form of papillomavirus — more specifically, Bovine Papillomavirus (BPV), a condition that causes skin growths.
The virus is usually spread through direct contact, and in this case, likely by oxpecker birds that hop from animal to animal while feeding on parasites.
“The good news is that it’s not life-threatening,” said Dr. Campling. “Many cases heal on their own, though the larger growths can cause discomfort.”
There’s currently no treatment for the disease in giraffes, but wildlife vets continue to monitor cases like this closely. Importantly, this condition doesn’t spread to humans.
A Bittersweet Sight
Though the giraffe appeared calm and continued to eat normally, the sight of her condition struck an emotional chord. People online expressed sadness, concern, and admiration for the animal’s strength.
For Marius and Michelle, the encounter was a powerful reminder of why they love the wild — and why it always holds something unexpected.
“You never know what you’ll see,” Marius said. “Even after all these years, it still surprises us.”
Sometimes nature shows us beauty, sometimes resilience, and sometimes the quiet strength of animals living with unseen struggles. And through the lens of one devoted photographer, the world was given a glimpse into the quiet courage of a giraffe that refused to let her condition slow her down.
