Pope Leo loves sports: These are the teams he roots for

When Robert Francis Prevost became Pope Leo XIV, many around the world were curious about his views on faith, leadership—and baseball.

Chicagoans, of course, had one pressing question: Cubs or Sox?

As it turns out, the new pope’s loyalties were never in doubt—at least according to his brother, John. “It’s Sox,” he confirmed in a recent interview. “He was never, ever a Cubs fan.”

Born in Chicago’s Bronzeville and raised in the southern suburbs, Pope Leo grew up in a sports-loving, but divided household. His mom was a loyal Cubs fan, while his dad rooted for the Cardinals. But young Robert made up his own mind—and it’s clear he’s always been a South Sider at heart.

The Chicago White Sox embraced the news quickly, sending the Pope a team jersey and cap all the way to the Vatican. “Family always knows best,” the team said in a statement. “Some things are bigger than baseball, but in this case, we’re proud to have a White Sox fan in Rome.”

From Dolton to the Vatican

Pope Leo spent his early years in the suburb of Dolton, attending St. Mary of the Assumption and later studying at Catholic Theological Union. Those who knew him back then say he’s always had a deep love for both his faith and his hometown.

Despite living abroad for many years, especially in Peru, he never lost touch with his Chicago roots—or his sports passions.

Soccer and Tennis, Too

Baseball isn’t his only game. Pope Leo is also a longtime supporter of Alianza Lima, one of Peru’s most beloved soccer teams. And when he’s not busy with papal duties, he’s a self-proclaimed amateur tennis player—though he jokes he hasn’t had much time to play lately.

In fact, before he became pope, he even attended the 2005 World Series to cheer on the White Sox in person.

From the South Side bleachers to St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV carries a love of sports—and a hometown loyalty—that’s as enduring as his faith.
