Remembering Dan Haggerty the Beloved Star of Grizzly Adams

Dan Haggerty, the actor who became a household name as the gentle mountain man with a flowing beard and a bear named Ben, has passed away in Burbank, California. He was best known for playing the title role in the 1974 film The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams and the popular NBC television series that followed.

Before stepping into the spotlight, Haggerty worked in Hollywood as a stuntman and animal trainer. That all changed when a producer asked him to help reshoot some scenes for a low-budget movie about a man and his bear. Haggerty agreed—but only if he could star in the entire film.

That decision changed everything.

The movie, made for just $165,000, ended up earning close to $30 million at the box office. It told the heartfelt story of a man wrongly accused of murder who escapes to the wilderness and bonds with wildlife, including an orphaned grizzly bear. Based on a novel by Charles Sellier Jr., the story captured audiences with its themes of redemption, friendship, and a deep connection to nature.

Thanks to the film’s success, Grizzly Adams was adapted into a TV series in 1977, and Haggerty reprised his role as the forest-dwelling hero who found peace among animals and mountains. Viewers were enchanted. The show featured characters like Mad Jack (played by Denver Pyle) and Nakoma, a wise Native American friend played by Don Shanks, who would visit the cozy cabin shared by Adams and his bear.

Nature played a starring role, too—with scenes full of raccoons, owls, deer, bunnies, hawks, and cougars. It was a quiet, feel-good kind of show. As New York Times critic John Leonard once said, it “lukewarms the heart.”

Haggerty’s portrayal of Grizzly Adams earned him the People’s Choice Award in 1978 as the most popular actor in a new series. The show’s nostalgic charm and message of harmony with nature left a lasting impression.

The legacy of Grizzly Adams didn’t end with the series. Two follow-up films—Legend of the Wild (1978, theatrical release in 1981) and The Capture of Grizzly Adams (1982)—gave fans a final chapter. In the latter, Adams is finally cleared of the crime he never committed.

Dan Haggerty’s gentle spirit and bond with animals made him unforgettable. Through Grizzly Adams, he reminded us that healing and peace can be found in the wild—and sometimes, the best friendships are the most unexpected ones.
