Researchers Arnaud Wisman (University of Kent, UK) and Ilan Shira (Arkansas Tech University) found that, much like animals, humans subconsciously recognize the scent of putrescine as a warning sign — triggering an instinct to flee or become hyper-alert. In experiments, people exposed to putrescine were more likely to back away or act defensively, even though they weren’t consciously aware of the smell.

“We often don’t realize how much scent influences our emotions, preferences, and behavior,” the researchers explained.

While we’re used to thinking about scents like perfumes or food smells affecting our mood, it turns out even invisible, unnoticed odors like putrescine can set off powerful, primal reactions.

Interestingly, researchers compared this to how sexual pheromones work — except instead of attracting people, the scent of putrescine triggers avoidance and even hostility.
