Social Media Post

A recent social media post by former FBI Director James Comey has prompted calls for further review, after a photo he shared triggered concerns about potential threats toward public officials.

Comey posted an image on Instagram featuring seashells arranged in the pattern “86 47,” which some interpreted as a reference to violence. The number “86” has various slang meanings, including in hospitality and military contexts, where it can mean to cancel something—or, in more extreme interpretations, to eliminate or execute. The number “47” is widely assumed to refer to the 47th President of the United States.

Following backlash, Comey deleted the post and clarified its intent in a follow-up statement, saying:

“I posted earlier a picture of some shells I saw today on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message. I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me, but I oppose violence of any kind, so I took the post down.”

Despite the clarification, multiple agencies, including the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security, confirmed they are reviewing the matter. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem noted on social media that “this is being investigated and will be responded to appropriately.”

The FBI, led by Director Kash Patel, acknowledged it is aware of the incident and is in communication with other federal agencies as part of standard procedure when public safety concerns arise.

Additionally, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton sent a formal request to the FBI, asking for a review of previous investigations involving Comey during his tenure as director. Cotton cited concerns about possible past misconduct and argued that a full review would help ensure transparency and public trust.

While no formal charges have been filed, congressional sources indicate that Comey could face subpoenas if more questions arise about the intent or implications of the now-deleted post.

Legal analysts have emphasized that intent will likely play a crucial role in determining whether the post is considered protected speech or potentially inciting. As of now, the situation remains under review.
