Starved, Shackled, and Forced to Perform: The Heartbreaking Story of Tikiri the Elephant

In 2019, heartbreaking images emerged from Sri Lanka showing a frail, 70-year-old elephant named Tikiri, forced to march for miles in a religious parade—despite being sick, starving, and near death. Wrapped in a decorative costume to hide her emaciated body, Tikiri became a symbol of animal suffering around the world.

Behind the Costume: A Life of Silent Suffering

Tikiri was one of 60 elephants made to walk for ten nights in a row during a Buddhist festival known as the Esala Perahera. While fireworks exploded and music played, she trudged through the streets in chains—her body weak, her spirit broken.

Her costume was designed to make her look festive, but beneath the fabric, her bones jutted out painfully. Images showed her collapsed on the ground, too weak to stand. Her eyes, injured by the festival lights, told a silent story of suffering.

Outrage Around the World

When Save the Elephant Foundation shared the images on World Elephant Day, the world took notice. An online petition quickly gathered over 100,000 signatures, calling on Sri Lanka’s government to stop forcing old and sick elephants to perform.

One supporter wrote:

“Any level of cruelty to animals is reprehensible. This level of cruelty is absolutely deplorable. I only hope this elephant can be saved.”

The petition also urged then-Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to take action against the ongoing abuse.

Too Little, Too Late

Following the outcry, Tikiri was returned to her owner in Rambukkana—but the damage had already been done. Just weeks later, in September 2019, Tikiri passed away.

She never got to experience true freedom, only a brief moment of rest before her life ended.

A source close to her described her existence simply:

“It was a life of slavery.”

A Message That Lives On

After her death, Save the Elephant Foundation released a heartfelt statement:

“Tikiri’s suffering has ended. Her soul is now free. No more harm can come to her. That we could not help her before her eyes would shut forever fosters a renewed courage… What we wished for Tikiri, even a few days of freedom with love and care, we will demand for others.”

Her story now serves as a powerful reminder of the cost animals pay for human entertainment and tradition.

💔

If animals could speak, we’d weep. If nature had a voice, we might hide in shame.
