Vanished into the Night

I sat there, staring at the empty chair across from me, my stomach sinking with every passing second. Thirty minutes had turned into forty-five, then an hour. My date—gone without a trace.

The waitress, who had been nothing but pleasant earlier, suddenly changed her tone. She approached my table with an irritated look and said, “Sir, you need to leave. Now.”

I blinked. “What? Why?”

She crossed her arms. “Just go.”

Confused and frustrated, I grabbed my coat and stepped outside into the crisp night air. That’s when I heard them.

Sirens.

They screamed through the streets, flashing red and blue lights bouncing off the nearby buildings. A small crowd had gathered at the end of the block. Something had happened.

My pulse quickened as I made my way toward the commotion. And then, I saw her.

My date.

She was standing near an ambulance, her face pale, her eyes wide with shock. Her hands trembled as she spoke to a police officer.

I pushed through the bystanders, calling her name. She turned, and for a moment, relief washed over her face—before it was replaced with hesitation.

“What happened?” I asked, breathless.

She swallowed hard, glancing at the officer, then back at me. “I… I didn’t want you to see this.”

I frowned. “See what?”

The officer sighed and motioned toward the paramedics. They were loading someone onto a stretcher—a man, his face barely visible under an oxygen mask. He looked battered, his shirt stained with blood.

I felt a cold chill run down my spine.

“That’s my brother,” she whispered. “The call I got—it was him. He was attacked just a few blocks away. I ran to find him, but I was too late. He was barely conscious when I got there.”

My heart pounded. “Oh my God… is he going to be okay?”

“They say he’ll survive,” she said, her voice shaking. “But whoever did this… they got away.”

I looked at the officer. “Do they have any leads?”

He shook his head. “We’re still gathering information. But based on what witnesses saw, this wasn’t random.”

I turned back to her. “Do you think… he was targeted?”

She hesitated, then nodded. “Yeah. He’s been mixed up in some bad stuff lately. He didn’t tell me everything, but I knew he was scared. I just… I didn’t think it would come to this.”

I exhaled sharply. “Why didn’t you tell me? I would have gone with you.”

“I didn’t want to drag you into it,” she admitted. “And honestly… I didn’t expect it to be this bad.”

I reached for her hand, and to my surprise, she didn’t pull away. Instead, she squeezed my fingers like she was holding on for dear life.

For a long moment, we just stood there—sirens wailing in the distance, the city alive with chaos, and yet, in that moment, nothing else mattered.

Finally, she spoke. “I don’t expect you to stick around after this. Most people wouldn’t.”

I looked at her, really looked at her. The fear in her eyes. The weight she carried alone.

And I made my choice.

“I’m not most people,” I said.

A tear slipped down her cheek. “You’re really staying?”

I nodded. “Yeah. I am.”

And in that moment, amidst the flashing lights and the uncertainty of what was to come, I knew—this wasn’t just a date.

This was the start of something much more.
