Violent Criminal Records

As unrest continues in Los Angeles, new details have emerged about over a dozen undocumented immigrants recently arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Many of those detained have serious criminal records, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

ICE began a series of raids on June 6 across Los Angeles, which led to the arrest of hundreds of undocumented individuals—many of whom had previously been convicted of violent crimes, including rape, murder, and robbery.

In response to the protests and violence that followed the ICE actions, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco sharply criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom, claiming the governor has made matters worse.

“They are not protesting—they are trying to violently influence politics,” Bianco said. “This goes against everything our Constitution stands for.”

He continued, “Governor Newsom is fueling this chaos. He should step aside and let law enforcement do its job.”

Who Was Arrested?

The DHS has released details about 19 individuals taken into custody. Here are just a few of the most serious cases:

  • Lionel Sanchez-Laguna (Mexico) – Convicted of shooting into an occupied dwelling, child cruelty, battery, and assault with a semi-automatic firearm.
  • Cuong Chanh Phan (Vietnam) – Convicted of second-degree murder after opening fire at a high school graduation party in 1994. Sentenced to 15 years to life.
  • Cielo Vivar-Ubaldo (Mexico) – Previously deported. Convicted of sex with a minor, drug violations, and hit-and-run.
  • Jose Cristobal Hernandez-Buitron (Peru) – Convicted of robbery and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
  • Julian Riveros-Cadavid (Colombia) – Arrested on immigration charges. Prior arrests include domestic battery, child endangerment, assault with a deadly weapon, and narcotics.
  • Rolando Veneracion-Enriquez (Philippines) – Convicted of theft, assault, burglary, and sexual assault with a foreign object. Sentenced to 37 years in prison.
  • Victor Mendoza-Aguilar (Mexico) – Convicted of drug offenses, assault with a deadly weapon, and resisting law enforcement.
  • Armando Ordaz (Mexico) – Criminal history includes sexual battery, theft, and possession of stolen property.

Political Reactions

The Department of Homeland Security released a statement saying:

“Our officers are taking dangerous individuals off the streets, even as local leaders try to obstruct their work.”

Meanwhile, Governor Newsom has been critical of the raids and has accused the federal government of escalating tensions in Los Angeles. A citywide curfew remains in place, and law enforcement is on high alert as protests continue.
